The Dysautonomia Research Institute, and the field it works in.

The Dysautonomia Research Institute was founded in 2005 to study the autonomic nervous system and is now part of Autonomic Health. Its work asks how autonomic regulation can be measured, how it varies between people, and what the published literature reports about it.

Two questions: balance, and coherence.

At rest, the autonomic nervous system holds a balance between its two branches — that’s homeostasis. But a balanced system doesn’t just sit still; it responds. When the body is challenged — a deep breath, a change in posture — each branch should react in a coordinated, predictable way. Coherence is whether the body’s physiology responds in step with that expected pattern, or against it. The ANS Test measures both — the resting balance, and how coherently each branch responds across the test’s phases.

Homeostasis

One dashboard for a body in balance

For most of human history the best healers described health as balance. Modern biology gave that intuition a name and a mechanism — and in the autonomic literature it becomes something you can plot: sympathetic activity against parasympathetic activity, with balance holding the diagonal.

Sympathetic activity runs along the horizontal axis, parasympathetic up the vertical. When the two move in proportion, a person sits inside the diagonal corridor — balance. Positions further below it correspond to populations described in the autonomic literature, and the arrow marks the direction the literature calls autonomic decline.

A general-science figure describing the autonomic nervous system as a field of study, following the published CCAL framework (Adiraju 2017; see publications above). The classifications name populations studied in the autonomic literature; they do not describe conditions that any Autonomic Health product diagnoses, treats, or is intended for.

Coherence

How a balanced system responds

Balance is a reading taken at rest. The second question is what happens when the body is asked to change: a paced breath, a shift in posture. Each branch has a direction it is expected to move in, and a pace it is expected to move at. Coherence is the relationship between the expected pattern and the observed one — described in the literature as autonomic resonance and coherence versus resistance.

The test asks your body to do four things in turn. Each graph follows one side of your nervous system. The shaded band is where it should be in each phase. The line is where it actually went.

Parasympathetic — rest-and-recover side

Sympathetic — act-and-adapt side

At rest, the two sides sit in balance. Under challenge they are not meant to stay balanced — each phase asks one side to lead and the other to step back. Coherence is whether that handover happens cleanly, phase after phase.

Illustrative figure. Not a result, and not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or condition.

The coherence framework — autonomic resonance and coherence vs. resistance — is drawn from co-founder Dr. Ramesh Adiraju’s published work (J Rheumatol Arthritic Dis, 2017; see publications above).

An old idea, finally on axes
c. 170 ADIn Rome, Galen — physician to Marcus Aurelius and two emperors after him — teaches that health is the body in balance, and illness what follows when that balance is lost.
CenturiesThe same instinct recurs across traditions of healing: health as equilibrium, not absence.
